Flywheels are what couples the engine to the manual transmission. The flywheel is bolted to the engine. Then, a splined clutch is held up against the flywheel friction surface with a pressure plate. The pressure plate keeps force on the clutch, which is forced up against the flywheel. Since a clutch is a friction disc component, wear is eminent on a flywheel. Flywheels should be resurfaced (machined true) whenever replacing a clutch. This allows the new clutch to both mate properly and reduce chatter. Flywheels can be resurfaced as many times as necessary, as long as a the thickness is within factory specs. Flywheels are both engine and transmission specific. On certain engines, flywheels contain counterweights to balance the engine, so it's important to order the proper flywheel to prevent engine bearing failure.
