Firebird headlights became pop-up lights in 1982. 81 and older lights were stationary. 70-76 & 82-97 models used a single light with dual beams. 77-81 & 98-02 models used dual lights for low and high beams. All models were sealed beams.

On pop-up models, all were operated by a electric motor. 82-86 models had an internal switch control, whereas 87-02 models used a current sensing module to activate and deactivate the motors. 87-92 models commonly had bushing failures and 93-02 models commonly had gear failures. On 93-02 models, the gears commonly fail, making an annoying rumble sound for roughly 5 seconds, but the headlights will still function properly. When the bushings fail on 87-92 models, the motors will not function properly. All pop-up models have a knob that can be manually turned to raise or lower the headlight should the motor fail.
