Bell housings connect the transmission to the engine. Bell housings are specific to both the transmission and the engine, therefor the correct bell housing must be used. If you are changing from one transmission type to another, you will need to select the bell housing for the year of the transmission you are using to year of the engine you are using. Not all combinations were available, for example, there is no factory bell housing to mate any T56 transmission to the Pontiac engine. Therefor, certain transmission swaps will require an aftermarket adapter bell housing.

Bell housings have a flywheel diameter limit. Some engines, such as the popular small block Chevy, came with a 14" flywheel, and a 12 3/4" flywheel. A bell housing designed for a 12 3/4" flywheel will not work with a 14" flywheel, it simply won't clear the inside. The larger the diameter of the flywheel, the larger the diameter of the clutch disc.

Most factory bell housings are aluminum, however, some older ones are cast iron.
