Alternators, also called generators, are what charges your car's battery, and also supplies power to the vehicle. A properly working alternator should be able to run the car with a dead battery, however, a damaged battery may cause the alternator not to be able to function properly. You should always have a battery tested prior to changing an alternator, and the battery should always be charged before changing an alternator. Alternators are not meant to charge dead batteries, they are intended to maintain the battery.

The factory decides the power output (amps) based on the cars needs. If you decide to upgrade the amperage of your alternator, you should always have your charging system's wiring inspected and or upgraded. Installing a 140 AMP alternator in place of an 85 AMP alternator may burn the charge wire if the charge wire is not rated for the 140 AMP alternator. Care should be taken with any electrical repair.
