Speakers are what makes your music audible. There are many variations with factory speakers, with size, impedance and frequency being the most common differentials. Depending on the factory installed options, speakers will differ between models. Each speaker location has a size limit, so it's important to replace a speaker with one of the same size. It isn't always a "space" issue as far as what you can fit in the space. Depth is important (especially on convertible models). Some speakers are designed for a certain amount of air to be behind them to produce a quality sound. The larger the speaker, the more air behind the speaker is required to maximize sound quality. Most factory speakers are 4 ohms, however, uplevel stereo systems in many 4th gen cars may use 2 ohm and 10 ohm speakers as well. Generally speaking, the higher the ohms, the better the sound quality can be produced, the lower the ohms, the more power that can be put out. Using multiple ohm speakers like the factory does, typically allows the best of both worlds. Changing from one type ohm speaker to another value is not recommended, as the amplifiers are made for certain ohms. Using a higher ohm speaker in place of a lower ohm speaker will reduce the power output at the speaker. Using a lower ohm speaker in place of a higher ohm speaker will increase the power output of the speaker. Each speaker (factory or aftermarket), has a frequency range. The lower the frequency, the more bass is available. The higher the frequency, the more treble is available. Speakers generally fall into 4 categories : Subwoofer (extremely low frequency), Woofer (low frequency), Mid-Range (mid frequency), Tweeter (high frequency). A full range speaker would be consider a speaker that produces low to high frequency (including mid range frequency). Some speakers are 2-way (a woofer with a tweeter in one assembly), some are 3-way (a woofer, a mid-range, and a tweeter in one assembly). A component system usually includes individual speakers, such as a separate woofer and a separate tweeter.
